Somnium: an "Inception" RPG

Not everything begins with a bang. The phenomenon of dream-sharing began about as quietly as any other innovative science does, and, also as with any other science, there are those who would keep it that way, and those who would exploit it.

Dream infiltration has long since been illegal- not that that has stopped anyone before. There is too much to be gained from that particular vocation for a few frivolous laws to stop its progress. Extractors do the bidding of anyone with enough money and motive to hire them, and rumor has it that one of the field's best, Dom Cobb, actually pulled off an inception. This is sure to lead to a rash of copycat attempts, and perhaps even a few successes.

For those with more lawful aims, there are resources for learning and practicing the various aspects and uses of dreams. There is a clinic that applies dream analysis as one of its therapeutic methods, and a few schools have begun to offer more detailed courses in oneirology, though these have been closely monitored by the government since the shutdown of Project MERCY.

This is only the beginning of what can be done with the human mind, a place that could be considered the real "final frontier." The amount of feats that can be achieved by infiltrating dreams is rapidly increasing, even as the public remains only mildly aware of the possibilities associated with dreams. This may be merely an unfortunate circumstance, or it may be for the best. After all, what is the significance of privacy in a world where even one's most personal secrets are not safe?
